Top comedy shows that are making people laugh

Laughing seems to be getting difficult and so is the quality of shows, behind the effort. However, despite all the slapstick comedy serials, there are a few genuine shows, which do make us tickle.

Although some are new, there are some oldies in the bandwagon, which continue to thrill and entertain us, sending us into a rollicking, laughing tizzy!

Taarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma

Undoubtedly, ‘TMKOC’ remains the unbeatable, laughable and the best show for portraying satire sensibly and hilariously on screen. Ever since the show began on Sab TV, it has been creating a huge fan following. Right from discussing social issues of the people of the Gokuldham society to resolving them with positive approach, everything is dealt with healthy, clean humor on this show.

Chidiya Ghar

Another comedy show on Sab TV, is roaring out aloud. This one is no zoo, but a house, named after its late occupant ‘Chidiya Narayan.’ The serial now revolves around the funny day to day incidents, in the lives of Kesari Narayan (the husband of the deceased) and his two sons and their families. Showcasing animal like traits in humans remains the core concept behind the comedy show.

Jeanie aur Juju

This is a newbie in the Sab’s list of comedy shows. The show is filled with both romantic and fantasy escapades of Jeanie and her heartthrob Captain Vicky. Though discovered by the latter, in a bottle, Jeanie now finds her way into Captain’s life, to help him make it easy. However, she turns it topsy turvy with every little help.

Comedy Circus Ke Ajoobe

Although the host may laugh more at times, making you think whether the issue was that funny, but the show on Sony TV, does make a name in some best comedy shows of the country today. Giving chances to best stand up comedians, some of them debutant as well, is something which the show has done for the past 5 years. Five years is no joke and the comedy show is still pulling strong. With celebrity guests, hosts Sohail Khan and Archana Puran Singh seem to be enjoying more with the stand up comedians.

FIR

Sab TV seems to raking all the laughs for its shows. FIR is another one in its kitty, which has been sending laughing waves across masses. The show revolves around a funny cop and her sub-inspector and their wacky ways of tackling problems in their cases. The entire experience of crackling mysteries in a hilarious way makes the show appealing.

Hum Aapke Hai In Laws

This show deals with life’s lessons, which comes via in-laws in a newly married couple’s life. The everyday bickering, to the not so happening events, everything teaches Damini and Gulshan Grover, a few lessons in wisdom. Had this been from the neighbors, things would have been easy, but not when the neighbors are their in-laws itself.

Wah Wah Kya Baat Hai

Redefining the format of ‘Hasya Kavi sammelan’ is the new show, WWKBH, which tries to take comedy to a new level.  The show makes the entire poetry recitation seem a less tedious task and more of an entertainer in this 1 hour show.

New comedy show on Life Ok ‘Laugh India Laugh’ – Can it really be a Clean Comedy Show?

Laugh India Laugh’, is a new comedy show to be aired on ‘Life Ok’. You might wonder, yet another Comedy Show, some more drama and below the belt jokes. Well you might be surprised to know that this new show is different. It promises to be a clean comedy show. It means that it will not contain any double meaning jokes.

So do you think that it can live up to its promise of being a Clean Comedy Show? Well time will only tell if that’s true. Somehow the audiences are used to double meaning jokes thanks to Comedy Circus. There is no doubt that Comedy Circus has been the most successful show till now, but will this new show generate the interest of the audiences? TV is also a family medium and one can’t always show bold things. So what is this show all about? Who will be the judges? Hang on, we have the answers. This daily comedy show will be aired on Life Ok’ channel from July 15 at 10.30 pm and Later, with top 18 contestants from India and Pakistan, the show will be shown on weekend at 10 pm. Guess what, who is back? Shekhar Suman. Yes he will be joined by Chunky Pandey and Mika Singh on the judge’s panel; truly a unique combination of judges.

Talking about Chunky Pandey, he has appeared in over 55 movies in a career that has spanned over two decades and has been nominated once for his supportive role in Tezaab. Chunky also enjoyed superstardom in Bangladeshi Cinema as most of his movies were successful. Mika, better known as ‘The Badmaash of Bollywood’, is a singer, composer, performer and songwriter and has belted out many chart busters from his private albums and Bollywood films. He is considered a highly acclaimed musician, and most of all the ‘Powerhouse Entertainer’. As the title suggests it is a comedy show that brings some of the best stand-up comedians, who have never been seen before, from India and Pakistan to entertain the country.

It is normally said that Humor is a male dominated art. Well this show is also not that different in those aspects and it will have only one Female contestant. Although the USP of the show is clean comedy, will it strike the right chord with the television audiences? Do send in your views and feedback about this new comedy show.

Where is the humor? (Comedy shows drying up on Indian TV)

If you are also not able to find humor in our comedy shows then you are definitely in the category where people are waiting for good and ‘clean’ comedy on Indian television and if you have already find it then please share what I am missing. Oh yes… and if in case you ask me to switch on to latest shows on SAB TV then I agree there are two or three good shows which are worth giving time like Taarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashmah and recently launched R.K. Laxman Ki Duniya. However all the remaining shows fail to impress even a bit.

Apparently the Indian Television industry was expected to grow over 500 billion by the end of 2011 and currently it has over 500 channels broadcasted. But I still find dearth of substance in our tv shows. For example comedy shows which are my all time favourite are definitely way too below the level of good comedy or sitcom shows. Let us take a look at the journey of Indian television in terms of comedy shows in last 28 years.

Yeh Jo hai Zindagi was India’s first sitcom aired in 1984 on Doordarshan. The show written by comedy writer Sharad Joshi was such a huge hit that even box-office openings in cinemas were affected due to the airing of the show because it aired on Friday nights. Then came the ‘era’ in 1993 of two most widely admired comedy shows ever in the history of Indian television: Dekh Bhai Dekh and Zabaan Sambhalke. I am sure that these two names certainly brings a big smile on everyone’s face and those unforgettable characters like Balraj Diwan (Navin Nischol), Samir Diwan (Shekhar Suman), Gareema (Deven Bhojani), Mohan Bharti (Pankaj Kapoor) and many other became an integral part of our lives. Within two years Doordarshan launched another hilarious comedy Srimaan Srimati in 1995 that gave India one of its favourite characters ‘Dilruba’. Simultaneously Zee TV launched its most popular comedy show till date Hum Paanch in 1995. Another hit show Padosan was launched on DD Metro in 1998. All these have left a legacy behind them and I can’t find any show matching up to their level currently or in these all years.

In modern day classics i can count Office Office easily which was launched in 2001 on SAB TV. This hugely popular and admired sitcom was based on corruption and bribery in public offices. The story revolved around Mussadilal (Bollywood actor Pankaj Kapoor) who was often harshly greeted by the corrupt officials. “Mussadilal” was the favourite character of viewers for a very long period and we remember him fresh as ever even now.

Now coming back to today’s topic of this post “Why comedy shows are drying up on Indian television”? Honestly after all these years finally in 2005 I thought that there is a chance that Indian comedy can get back to track when a new reality comedy show “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge” was launched. The Star One’s laughter show won millions of hearts and before we knew there were four seasons in their kitty. The laughter challenge gave way to all these shows on “Comedy Circus” that are aired on Sony TV regularly. However the quality of the comedians and their so called “punches” has deteriorated immensely. In terms of another blogger whose post I read the other day “the contestants of these shows grew up with time and became big-time perverts”. The reality comedy shows today are nothing but a sign toward the hypocrisy of Indian television that call these laughter shows full of double-meaning jokes family shows.

So what is the exact reason? Are we short of good comedy writers, or we are short of good character artists who can do good comedy or it is just the mindset that is not able to accept some clean and good talent? Tell us your views if you have answer to these questions. :)

What makes Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah a special show !!!

Gokuldham Society….. any bells ringing…….. I am sure that most of you might relate this society to Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Did you know that In August 2010, it beat Balika Vadhu to become the most watched TV show in India. And is by far the longest-running daily comedy show on Indian television. So what makes this show special…..? Is it the story or the characters!!! Don’t worry, we will soon find the answer to this question.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsfQxORNFKw]

Let’s start with what this show is all about. The Gokuldham society is where all the action happens. It is a society with Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamilian, Bengali, Parsi families staying together. They just don’t stay together, but also share their joys and sorrows. Every festival is being celebrated with the same vigor as any other festivals. Every family participates in the events organised by the society members.

The Show is been anchored by Mr Taarak Metha, who is a writer by profession and Jetha Bhai’s best friend. He is accompanied by his wife Anjali Mehta, who is always worried about his husbands diet and ends up offering him some amazing dishes ;)  Taarak Metha can also be described as the life saver of Jetha Lal. Talking about the main characters of the show, Dilip Joshi ie Jethalal Champaklal Gada and Disha Vakani ie Daya Jethalal. The show revolves around their family. It also includes Tipendra Jethalal Gada (a.k.a. Tapu), Champaklal Jayantilal Gada ie Dadaji and one and only one brother of Daya Bhabi, Sundar (a.k.a. Sundarlal). You will notice that in almost every eposide, Jethalal is surrounded with problems and issues. There are some amazing moments in the show when Daya Ben and Sundar get together and then Jethalal’s expressions are worth watching. And to top it all Daya Bhabi’s Garba, it is a icing on the cake.

Mr Bhide ie Aatmaram Tukaram Bhide who is a teacher by profession, is accompanied by his wife Madhavi Bhide, and their daughter Sonu Bhide. Madhavi is famous for her “achaar” and “papad”. Mr Bhide is Jethalal’s best friend…. Hang on hang on …. You know what I meant by best friend. ;)  He never leaves a chance to complain about the mischiefs of Tapu and Tapu sena….. I know you are waiting to hear about Mr Krishnan Iyer and his wife Babita. Jethalal always tries to impress Babita ji and ends up flirting with her and who can ignore the cold war between Iyer and Jethalal.  Now let’s meet the Sher of Gokuldham Society, Roshan Singh Sodhi and his wife Mrs Roshan. He is a happy-go-lucky person and always super charged to take on any problems that arise in the society. His son Gogi too is full of fun and an important part of Tapu Sena. Meet Mr Hansraj Hathi, and his wife Komal Hathi, who is worried about the eating habbits about her husband and their son Goli.

I am sure that ladies watching the show look forward to the Kitty Parties and the gossip that happen on regular basis and the gents that gather at Abdul’s Shop to have Soda almost every night. Am I missing something…. Well, you right, who can miss Toofan Express ie Patrakar Popatlal, who is in search of his dream girl and his famous lines  “cancel kardo” and “duniya hila doonga.” Hang on there are a few more interesting characters that end up troubling Jethalal ie Nattu Kaka and his nephew Bhaga. They end up creating problems for Jetha Bhai at his Shop (unknowingly)

Well these are some of the few reasons that make this show what it is right now.. Super Hit. I am sure that you might have more of such reasons from your end. Also you might have your favourite moments from the show. Do let us know about it. Looking forward to hear from you. Happy Viewing………
