Hope all cricket crazy fans have memorized the dance moves and are ready to groove. And why not, after all India’s very own Premiere League is back with season 6 with a chiming caveat “Sirf Dekhne Ka Nahi”. The promotions are already on air and biggies of cricket and entertainment have been vouched in for bull’s-eye.
Let’s find out, what’s in store for GECs during this IPL. Lalit Modi’s vision to change the way people looked at this sport in the sub-continent came through in year 2008. Entire nation was gripped into the fever of this commercial cricket-cum-entertainment club and created a huge dent in the viewership of GEC shows. To the extent that shows flunking on TRP test were axed.
Wisely the GECs played safe in 2009 and did not launch new shows during IPL 2. 25 new shows were launched post the cricketing break to woo back the lost audience. The pattern though continued in 2010 and 2011 with some 10-15 shows going on air post IPL, but the IPL bubble was bursting and losing its sheen.
The GEC genre had shrunk by 4.35 per cent during IPL 4 (in the All India market), as compared to a 9.07 per cent drop it had witnessed in the first season of IPL. This is what restored the confidence in the GECs and they launched 5 new shows during IPL 5 to maintain their viewership. IPL 5 turned out to be a flop show registering the lowest TRP in last 5 years.
IPL 6, therefore, is not just another game challenge this year. Its entire existence has been put to test. Another significant dip in TRP may even result in a death blow for the league as most of the revenue is generated through Television.
Interestingly no new fiction shows are getting launched during IPL 6 which, some may say reflects that IPL brand is no longer a threat to GECs. The television fraternity seems to echo the expression. They are not ignoring the threat posed by IPL but this time, are keen to tweak the content of their existing dailies, as and when required, to maintain their viewership just like other days of the year.
So as we see it today, GECs are all set to take this challenge head-on without any major transformations. They expect a dip in TRP but not significant enough to push them over the edge. IPL down trending TRP is good enough reason for us also to believe that this time the cricket divinity may create a hiccup but shall not be able to supersede the daily shows/ soaps addiction.
Will the predictions go wrong and IPL 6 will be able to grab substantial eyeballs for its sustenance by creating a dent in GEC viewership? Will the star presence breathe life into a fading tournament? Well we will have to rely on TRP data for the answer.

Amidst all adrenaline rush and much anticipated glam roll, IPL finally kicked off on a feisty note on 2nd April, 2013. With the ceremonial lamp lighting ceremony by none other than the revered Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, the show began with some frenzied and glamorous performances.
Amogst the crowd, the who’s who of cricket fraternity was also seen. This included Rajeev Shukla, the chairman of IPL, N Srinivasan, BCCI President, Arun Jaitley, the vice-president and many others.
The show opened with KKR’s owner, Shahrukh Khan’s voice in the background booming, ‘Where the mind is without fear’. Shahrukh’s rendition to a famous Rabindra Sangeet poetry lent an ethereal feeling into the atmosphere, as the dance performances came alive with the regional song.
With a background of heavy cascade of shimmering silver curtains, the performance, which followed soon after witnessed some jazzed up acrobatics by a well trained troupe, consisting primarily of Chinese percussionists, flying drummers and a balloon performer, dropping the iconic trophy into the KKR captain’s hand.
The auditorium soon reverberated with the booming voice of Ravi Shastri’s ‘Welcome boys and girls’ captivating and sending the frantic audience into an uproar.
Starting with the Indian Cricket team captain, M S Dhoni, the team captains, signed the ‘ICC fair play pledge’, to mark the onset of the almost 2 months long festive cricketing premier league.
After the acrobatics, sky dropping performances, and some fair play petitions, it was time for what all waited for. It was time to witness a grand entry of our beloved Bollywood stars.
Dressed in a shimmering golden gown, carried on a chariot, looking no less than some Egyptian princess, Katrina’s beauty looked replete with glamour, and exquisite elegance. Dancing on her songs, Sheila aka Katrina rocked as the svelte and suave girl, throbbing every heart in the auditorium.
Soon after, it was Deepika’s turn to re-ignite the stage with her power packed and energy spiked performances. She grooved to music tracks like ‘Tumhi ho bandhu, sakha tumhi’.
Shahrukh, after a long wait, made a grand entry with ‘Main hoon Don’ and also jigged to ‘Kuch kuch hota hai’ with some children. Lending his voice to his famous dialogue ‘picture abhi baaki hai mere dost’ he swigged to some more raunchy numbers like ‘Chammak challo’ etc.
Usha Uthup and Bappi Lahiri were also rearing to go as they did Kolkata ceremony proud by singing songs from their famous compositions.
However, what made the show reach its zenith was the star performance by the famous rapper, Pit Bull, who set the stage on fire with his great performances.
The IPL inaugural ceremony, which was also reported live on TV, on Sony Six, on 2nd April, started with some casual chit chat by Gaurav Kapoor and the captains of Kolkata Knight Rider and Chennai Super Kings, in the crowded auditorium of Salt Lake stadium.
While Gaurav reported the auditorium happenings, Kapil Dev and Sidhu chatted away with Samir Kochhar about the razzmatazz, back stage, in their extra innings segment. They were accompanied by the glitzy, Karishma Kotak , apparently the newbie anchor of IPL extra innings T20, who will be reporting the nuances of the matches, shoulder to shoulder with the cricket stalwarts. She is making her debut with the 6th season of IPL. Let’s see what this lasso has to add, as a substitute to the noodle strapped ‘Mandira Bedi’?
