India gets its First Male Action Entertainment Channel – Big RTL Thrill, action ka baap

Mumbai, March 19, 2013… Move over ladies as the men take control of the television remote! That entertainment on television in India is designed largely to meet the tastes of the Indian women is a well known fact, but this is all set to become a myth with the launch of India’s first and only dedicated male entertainment channel, BIG RTL THRILL. With the tag-line Action ka Baap, the Channel features the best international action content dubbed in Hindi.

Marking the launch of the channel across the key markets of Mumbai and Delhi, in addition to Uttar Pradesh (where it launched a quarter ago) is none other than television star Arhaan Behll who comes on board as the host of one of the most electrifying and thrilling shows Fear Factor – Darr se Takkar. Launching the Channel and announcing the show, while keeping with the channel imagery, the actor landed in true macho style from a chopper, surrounded by a bevy of fair-skinned beauties, illustrating the best international action content for Indian males, dubbed in the national language – Hindi. The show launches on March 25th and will air from Monday to Friday at 9pm on BIG RTL THRILL.

BIG RTL THRILL is positioned to create a new genre of entertainment for male audiences, beginning with Mumbai and Delhi and reaching out to key markets across the Hindi Speaking Markets of India in a phased manner. With male skewed entertainment being sporadically available across channels and no single destination catering exclusively to male audiences, BIG RTL THRILL comes as an answer to their demands for edge of the seat, action entertainment.

The content mix of the Channel will range hand-picked internationally renowned reality shows, action series, wrestling shows, extreme sports, game shows and action films, dubbed in Hindi, ensuring mass appeal while promising male audiences the adrenaline rush they seek from their television viewing experience. With content acquired from some of the most reputed names ranging Fremantle and Endemol, this Channel is poised to change the landscape of male television entertainment in India.

Offering some of the latest seasons of Fear Factor: Darr Se Takkar from US, UK and Russia as well as some of the biggest global hit shows, the channel targeted at male audiences between the age of 15-44 years is poised to be a success. Some of the key international shows on the channel, dubbed in Hindi are:

  •  Fear Factor : Darr Se Takkar, one of the most challenging reality shows, will showcase the latest seasons from UK, US and Russia. Ensuring mass appeal amongst male audiences of India, the Channel has roped in television actor Arhaan Behl as the host of the show.
  • Cobra 11 Highway ke Rakhshak -is an action series featuring a highway patrolling team comprising 2 men who solve crimes on drugs, robberies and more. The show which has an excellent blend of suspense and action is distributed across over 100 countries globally
  • Criss Angel: Magic ya Sach -is the most successful magic show in television history and is viewed by over 100mn people each season across 90 countries. During its 6 seasons and over 100 episodes, Criss created and performed over 1,000 mind-blowing demonstrations that still amaze and astound viewers.

Speaking about his association with the Channel, Arhaan Behll said, “This Channel is superb news for men in India who want to consume action entertainment, but have no single such entertainment destination on television. This Channel is built across a varied canvas of programs that range action reality shows, extreme sports, game shows, action films and more, making it truly a comprehensive offering. I am especially excited to be part of Fear Factor : Darr Se Takkar, which demonstrates one’s ability to face and overcome some of the worst fears. I have been an avid watcher of the show, and am looking forward to present an Indian perspective to the stunts. This is the first time I will be hosting a stunt-based show and I hope that my fans will enjoy watching the show.”

Mr. Sunil Kumaran, Business Head – Language TV, Reliance Broadcast Network said, “BIG RTL Thrill has witnessed phenomenal growth since the channel first launched in Uttar Pradesh a quarter ago. Being the first and only Hindi male action entertainment channel in India, the internationally dubbed content has garnered mass appeal amongst audiences and we are confident of the same response being replicated in Mumbai and Delhi.

Our decision to bring in an Indian celebrity with mass appeal as a host for Fear Factor: Darr Se Takkar is to ensure better connect with audiences, and Arhaan was the most appropriate choice. We are confident that the Channel will become the answer to male audiences’ quest for entertainment in India.” So, don’t forget to follow us on Twitter-iDubba for regular updates and set reminders for your favorite shows on iDubba app..

Ek Thhi Naayka to bring many veteran actors back; Ekta, Vishal to make acting debut

[To set reminder and check TV schedule of Ek Thhi Naayka click here...]

We have seen old shows being packed up and new shows coming up for entertainment and TRPs. We have seen Bollywood actors’ coming to our daily soaps for promotion of their upcoming movies. But have you ever heard of a mini television series being launched exclusively for promotion of an upcoming film. Well, indeed a novel concept and from the one who is known to do the unexpected, Ekta Kapoor.

Be it for creating history with shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahanni Ghar Ghar Kii which broke all TRP records or be the one to occupy top 4 slots in Television’s 1000 episodes elite club and have 6 shows to appear in this list out of the 13. Be it filming the most expensive shot in the history of Indian Television (death scene of Ansh Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi had costed approximately Rs. 5,00,000 of a single shot) or being the first one to bring most sensuous scenes on Indian Television through her show Bade Acche Lagte Hain or be it redefining love stories with her shows like Kahiin To Hoga, Kasautii Zindagii Kii, Kasamh Se, Pavitra Rishta, Pyaar Kii Ye EK Kahanni. Be it re-introducing the concept of leap and implementing the same in style in her shows or be it introducing concept of season 2 for her shows on public demand (shows like Hum Paanch, Kutumb and Kitani Mohabaat hai) Ekta Kapoor of Balaji Telefilms has done it all for Indian Television and every time in a style that is par excellence.

Adding yet another feather in her cap, Ekta Kapoor has tied up with Vishal Bharadwaj, ace music and movie director, to launch a promotional 16 episode series titled Ek Thhi Naayka for their upcoming thriller movie Ek Thi Daayan. The movie stars Emraan Hashmi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Huma Qureshi and Kalki Koechlin in lead roles. The movie is scheduled to release on April 18, 2013. The movie is produced by Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor, Vishal Bhardwaj and Rekha Bhardwaj. As per Ekta, the movie is folklore and is not a true story.

EK Thhi Naayka is a big ticket promotional series and will have 8 different horror stories based on the witches from the film. In each story we will see televisions and Ekta Kapoor’s 8 favourite mahanayika’s. They are Smriti Irani, Sakshi Tanwar, Shweta Tiwari, Ankita Lokhande, Kritika Kamra, Aamna Sharif, Mouli Ganguly and Pooja Gaur. In each story these TV actress will be seen waging war against demons reinstating the learning good wins over evil.

We will get to see haunted stories from different city or state in our country. Smriti will be representing Gujarat, Sakshi will be from Rajasthan, Pooja will represent Delhi, Mouli from West Bengal, Kritika from Chandigarh, Aamna and Shweta will represent UP and Ankita will be from Maharashtra. Another well planned strategy from Balaji Telefilms for garnering a pan India appeal.

If speculations are to be believed than we may once again get to see televisions most lovable onscreen Jodi, Mihir-Tulsi aka Amar Upadhyay and Smriti Irani on this show. It will be their first appearance together post Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

We understand that all actors from the film will be doing cameo in the show which is slotted to be telecasted on channel Life OK from March 09,2013 on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 pm. Acting skills of Vishal and Ekta will also be put to test as they will also be seen in cameo appearance in the series. We will get to see Vishal in first episode and Emraan in the last episode.

Undoubtedly, this is an innovative marketing plan to create a supernatural series to intentionally instill the concept of evil among audiences so that they are pulled to the theaters for more. On paper, all of it appears logical and works but will this experiment do wonders for Ekta like her earlier endeavors?

Well, we wish luck to both – the promotional strategy Ek Thhi Naayka and the movie Ek Thi Daayan. We are keeping our fingers crossed for success of this joint venture, as it will then be a defining moment for unique merger of small and big screen and will open doorway for more innovations for audiences to benefit from. What’s Ekta Kapoor’s classic & historical love story ‘Jodha Akbar’ all about?

[To set reminder and check TV schedule of Jodha Akbar click here..]

“Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah, Furwa rawa, Hamesha hamesha salamat rahe
Tere ho kya bayain, Tu shaan-e-hindustan,
Hindustan teri jaan, Tu Jaan-e-Hindustan
Marhaba hooo, Marhaba”
Very aptly written by Javed Akhtar in the above lines, but its time to change the wordings a little… “Tera Ho Kya Bayain, Tu Shaan-E-Hindustan, Hindustan Teri Jaan, Par Kya Hoga Tu Jaan-E-Hindustan……….”

This question is surrounding the Television Industry from the day Ekta Kapoor announced her new show. Well a new show always creates a buzz and if it’s a show by Balaji Telefilms the current in the air is obvious, but my dear audience this show is extra special, because this show is non other than the epic love story from the pages of our history – Jodha and Akbar.

Ekta Kapoor, the undisputed queen of disputed Romantic/Family and Business Drama has now decided to venture in to the world of historical saga (God save the world; P)…. She has always created history with her shows and now she wants to remake a history.

Ekta Kapoor has always longed to make a classic, period love story for television. Her first attempt — the TV show Mahabharat in 2008 — was a disaster. In an attempt to give her dream another chance she has planed to bring this show on floor. And with that two things are also confirmed that – one, the historical love story of Jodha Akbar will be a lavish affair as it should be and some fictional elements will be added to the tale, apart from making a few dramatic changes to the love story.

Tanushree Dasgupta, creative director, Balaji Telefilms, says, “We realised that such larger-than-life and grand love stories are always well-accepted by family audiences. And we’re happy making love stories, no matter what era they are based in.” In 2008, director Ashutosh Gowariker epitomised the story on the silver screen in the film, Jodhaa-Akbar, which perhaps inspired Ekta. The big screen Jodha Akbar, was one of the costliest movies with the lead protagonists Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan wearing specially designed costumes and real jewelry, the bar is already set high what will our Balaji team do? Let’s see what’s for the starters.

The Search:

Being very particular about all her projects, Ekta has traveled across India to many cities and attended almost every audition personally to handpick the right actors for the roles of Mughal emperor Akbar and his Hindu wife Jodha bai.

Describing her rigorous search for a perfect couple, she says, “It’s tough to cast faces that have an enigma and old world charm, that are not very synthetic. They should look raw and less plastic. While casting for an era about 500 odd years ago, you realise that every face has to be looked at carefully.”

The Cast:

Jodha Bai: Paridhi Sharma
Finding Jodha Bai was not an easy task. After eight months nation-wide search and auditions, Paridhi Sharma as a Jodha.
This will be Paridhi’s first lead role after she appeared as part of the supporting cast in Ruk Jaana Nahi.

Akbar: Rajat Tokas

Last seen in Balaji Telefilms’ Tere Liye, actor Rajat Tokas is currently preparing for arguably one of the biggest roles of his career – Mughal Emperor Akbar.
The actor, who made his debut as the male lead with historical show Prithviraj Chauhan, and made his grand entry in the hearts of million is returning to this genre as Akbar. May be this can be the lucky charm for Rajat and the show.
Ekta says, “I wanted an actor who is a boy-man. Although Rajat has the innocence of a 19-year-old, he is seasoned in terms of maturity. Akbar was someone who became a soldier and a king at the age of 14 and by 17 he had already won a battle on his own. Rajat is an expert in martial arts and horse riding. He was perfect for me.”

Maham Anga:Ashwini Kalsekar

After having worked with Balaji Telefilms earlier on their show, “Kasamh Se”, as the scheming Jigyaasa, Ashwini Kalsekar, is once again getting a chance to work with the production house. Ekta Kapoor’s new period love story show, “Jodhaa Akbar” will have the versatile actress, essaying an important character.

Ashwini has been finalized to play the role of Maham Anga, apart from being the caretaker of the Emperor, she also acted as the political advisor to the king, on many sensitive issues. She held a special place in Akbar’s life, who respected her for her shrewdness and loyalty. Ashwini, who has always been a favorite with the Balaji’s, is excited to be a part of this ambitious project.

Adham Khan : Chetan Hansraj
We hear that Chetan Hansraj is due to play the pivotal role of Adham Khan who is the foster brother of Akbar and son of Maham Anga.
When contacted, Chetan Hansraj told us, “Yes, I have been approached for Ekta’s Jodhaa Akbar. I will take it up if I am able to sort out the date issue.

The Story:

Jodhaa Akbar is a sixteenth century love story about a political marriage of convenience between a Mughal emperor, Akbar, and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa.
Political success knew no bounds for Emperor Akbar. But little did Akbar know that when he married Jodhaa, a fiery Rajput princess, in order to further strengthen his relations with the Rajputs, he would in turn be embarking upon a new journey – the journey of true love.

Launch Date:
The show will feature on Zee TV, and the launch of Jodhaa Akbar is expected to be post IPL this year.

Controversies:

What?? The serial hasn’t been started yet. But then the show is walking on thin ice with heated shoes, after all the movie has also suffered the tangles of controversies and was initially banned in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttarakhand as the portrayal of ethnic Rajput people in the movie was criticized by members of the Rajput community as misleading, politically motivated historical revisionism that minimized Rajput history. The sword of similar controversies is already hanging on the show and one has already fallen.

Balaji Telefilm’s claim that Indore-girl Paridhi Sharma is their search for the role of princess Jodha’s but Vaibhav Gupta, a Mumbai- based freelance coordinator has claimed he had helped Balaji telefilms shortlist Paridhi Sharma contrary to media reports.
Gupta has lodged a complaint against Paridhi and associate creative head Balaji Telefilms Dev Verma, accusing them of cheating.

So, the count has started and there may be more of cases coming soon, we will keep you posted. Controversies or not the show has managed to create a buzz, we hope the show delivers what we are expecting from it. Waiting with baited breath to witness the phenomenal show and it’s phenomenal or not so phenomenal response.

Nominations of The 55th Annual Grammy Awards 2013

Gramophone Award aka Grammy Awards are all set to honor the outstanding achievements in the music industry. People compare the Grammy Awards to the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for stage performances, and the Academy Awards for motion pictures. This is truly an award show that is all about music music and more music. The first Grammy Awards ceremony was held on May 4, 1959 and this year it will mark its 55th ceremony. That is a major milestone in itself. The nominations were out for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. Before we share the nominations let’s look back at some interesting facts about this award show. Time to test your musical ears and brains :)

 Grammy Awards Facts:

  • With 31 Grammy Awards, Sir Georg Solti is the artist with the most Grammy wins.
  • Alison Krauss is the biggest winner among female artists with 27 awards.
  •  U2, with 22 Grammy Awards, holds the record for most awards won by a group
  • Snoop Dogg was nominated for Grammy Award 12 times but has not won the award.
  •  In 1959, Grammy honored 22 awards, whereas in 2010 they presented 109 awards.
  •  In 1989, Milli Vanilli became the first artists to be stripped of a Grammy because it was discovered that the voices on their album weren’t original.

Interesting right!! So what about Indian artists? Have they managed to rock the Grammy Awards? Well, yes, we have.

Pandit Ravishankar won the Grammy award three times in 1967, 1972 and 2001. The second Indian to win the Grammy award was Zakir Hussain and he won Grammy award for “Planet Drum” in 1992 and for “Global Drum Project” in 2009. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt won the award in 1994 for his album “A Meeting by the River” and the latest was won by AR Rahman by winning two awards for Slumdog Millionaire in 2010. Well there is no doubt that we can win many more awards and rock the Grammy awards once again.
